Team Prodigy's Low Yiyang out for rest of season

Team Prodigy suffered a major blow this week when team captain Yiyang suffered a fracture to his fibula, ruling him out for the rest of the season. This adds on the already accumulating list of injuries that have plagued the team's start to the season: Yiarn, Hongyao, Jiahui, Shawn and Bahrin. Fortunately for Team Prodigy however, Yiarn and Bahrin were available to play last Sunday, which saw the team snatch their first win in five matches.

Regarding Yiyang's injury status, Team Prodigy manager Kelvin Chua said: "I have yet to hear from the team physio. I don't know how serious it is but it does look like he will be out for the season. It's a blow, no doubt about it, we'll sorely miss his presence in midfield. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed, it'll be wonderful if we can have him back for the last few games."

When asked about his thoughts about Sunday's win, Kelvin commented: "We have had a tough start to the season, everything seemed to be going wrong for us. Players were missing through injury, work commitments and driving lessons and at times we were stretched even trying to field eleven men on the pitch. On the field, it was difficult for us to accept the way we lost the lead three times in a row, and seeing us at the bottom of the table was hard to bear. Thankfully, we won today, and hopefully this is going to galvanise us to win more games, which a team of our quality should be doing more often."

Team Prodigy's fans and wags, meanwhile, urged the players to capitalize on the hard fought victory on sunday to kick start the team into action. However, numerous warnings were sent to players to take care, amidst the growing incidence of leg fracture injuries in soccer matches. Team Prodgy is set to play Los Diablos on the 7th of March. It will be interesting to see how the affair will turn out, at a time when both teams are desperate to avoid losing any more games this season.

Team Prodigy have always begun the previous seasons well, but after four games in the current Division 4 season, they are currently bottom of the table after two consecutive losses. Much has been said about the high standard of the division but keeper Jiahui believes every player has to start to step up their games to grind out results if they are to achieve their aim of promotion again.

He said: "There will be numerous games where it will be tough and it is about trying to get a result, grinding out results whichever way we can. The most important thing is you get a result. Now that the season is already 4-6 games old, we have no more excuses for feeling lethargic and we really need to play better and defend better if we are to stand any chance of challanging the top 3. "

When asked about the leaky defence which concedes 12 goals in 4 games, Jiahui feels that the absence of Wilson who was rock for Prodigy last season is a crucial factor. He quipped: " Wilson is a big loss for us and this season, with Yiarn injured and Chingweng reverting to part time soccer, we have a shortage of central defenders, thus our defence is currently very unstable."

When prodded if there is any chance of Prodigy being relegated, Jiahui cautioned: " We are bottom of the league now, if we do not start to pick up more points, the possibility will increase every week."

"The only agenda for everybody now is to push through to the end of the season, whether that's trying to get away from the relegation area or pushing for a play-off place or a top-two place."

"Everybody will be very focused on what they want."

The work begins this Sunday against the Singapore Chinese FC.

INTRODUCTION

Prodigy was formed by a bunch of classmates from Victoria School in 1998. Its humble beginnings started when a gang of football mad friends would religiously play soccer under the HDB void decks or basketball courts after school using pong pong fruits, thus they were nicknamed the "pong pong boys' in the early days. On a fine day, while they were playing happily at the void deck somewhere in Tampines, they were challenged by a group of ah bengs for field soccer. As the boys were not able to form a 11 side team, they roped in their fellow school mates to join them for the first field soccer game at Braddell Sec field and named themselves Prodigy. Thus, Prodigy was born and soon, they found themselves playing recreational field soccer on and off throughout their JC and Army days. The founding members were Kelvin Chua, Ken, Bernard, Ching Weng, Weiyi, Henry, Kelvin Kwek, Sukiang, Kiat Hui.

The bulk of the first generation of Prodigians has since left the team after JC, with the team then going through a quiet period from 2002-2004. From 2004 onwards, the 2nd generation of Prodigy was formed and they regularly played Sunday friendly matches until 2006 when due to heavy schoolwork, the team went stagnant for another period of 2 years.

It was in late 2007 after taking part in a NUS soccer tournament and relishing the joy of competitive soccer did the old guards thought of joining a league. Hence, with the new recruitment of star players from friend referrals, a third generation of Prodigians were formed and they entered the Sunday Espzen league as Team Prodigy starting from the lowest rung of division 9 in Jan 2008. The first manager was Kelvin Chua, and since then, he has stepped down to be the manager mentor while Ken is now the current team manager of the team.

TEAM PERFORMANCE

Team Prodigy have been promoted every season since their inception in 2008 and in their maiden season, they won their 3rd place promotion playoff tie against AC united 3-2 by virtually the last kick of the game with the penalty by top scorer Mick Tan. The team then went on to secure 3rd place in their 2nd season and consecutive runner up positions in their 3rd and 4th season in Espzen. Looking ahead in their current 5th season in Division 4, the team's target is to be promoted again to the higher divisions and eventually, they hope to reach Division 1 and win the title and be crowned Kings of Espzen before they retire from the league. LOL. The team is currently looking for a sponsor and hope with new injection of funds, it can propel them to greater heights.

TRANSFER STORIES

The recruitment policy in Team Prodigy is based on the referral basis and as it is a close knit unit, only friends of friends are recommended into the team should the manager feel that there is a lack of cover or quality in a certain position. This is to ensure that team spirits are kept high and that everyone will know one another well on and off the pitch.

TACTICS

Prodigy usually play a traditional 4-4-2 winger formation as they have an abundance of talented wingers. Upfront will be a combination of their lanky Mick Tan who do the Luca Toni holding role while the other striker will be the pacy James or Hongyao. Midfielders consists of Captain Yiyang, Alonso Kun, Nigel and Manager Ken who will rotate among themselves. The fullbacks will overlap and join the wingers in the attack with the centrebacks doing the covering role. The team play a direct style of football with a mix of long balls and short passes usually at a high tempo and their strength is the counter attack with the team utilising the pace of the wingers and James.

KEY PLAYERS

James: Prodigy's current top markman was the biggest transfer coup in the history of the club when he left his childhood team Questra Vipers to join Team Prodigy in 2009 after his initial loan. Since his transfer and increased commitment, he has been the most dangerous threat in the team with his pace and finishing. Besides his blistering pace, he has since improved on his technique and teamwork and is now what Fernardo Torres is to Liverpool.

Bernard: One of the founder of the team, Bernard is one of the most likeable players in the team and his dazzling wingplay is reminiscing of Ryan Giggs in his younger days. As the captain of VJC track and field team in 2000, he is one of a handful of players who can challenge James to a 100m sprint. His other asset is that he is able to play on both wings and on his day, he can torment any defender playing on his side. A regular corner taker for the team as well and he once scored direct from the corner kick.

Jiahui: One of the most under rated player and perhaps the most important player of the team, Jiahui has rarely missed a game since Prodigy joined the league in 2008 and his attendence rate surprised many considering that he is a busy lawyer. His handling and kicking has improved tremendously since he was converted to a keeper from a striker during the first season and saving penalties is his forte as he has saved countless penalties since. A tall and confident guy, Jiahui is the Buffon for the team and his miraculous saves often win him man of the match awards.

MANAGER’S CORNER

Ken Goh is a trainee doctor current studying at NUS-DUKE medical school and beside his busy schedule, soccer is the only way for him to relax with his friends over books and he looks forward to every Sunday with Team Prodigy. He often picks up his players who live near him to the soccer venues and send them home after the game too. This has been going on for the past 2 years and on the pitch, he is a selfless individual who often plays himself out of positions to cover for teammates or if there is an absentee for a position. He also coordinates the attendence for each week game by sending out smses to the players.

Ken quotes: " I am really proud of the team considering that 10 years ago, we were a bunch of nobodies who played soccer wearing our home t-shirts. Now we are playing in division 4 of Espzen and the players have since grown with the team. Our values are based on the 3 principles of friendship, passion and sportmanship and most of us are football lovers and we enjoy our soccer every Sunday. We treasure our friendships too and it is this bond that keep us together during our toughest times in the league and help us overcome setbacks. I hope that we can keep this passion going until we are old."

Questra Vipers and Eastern Vale face a challenging weekend ahead for differing reasons. While Questra travel to Marsiling Secondary to face Premier Division side St. Andrew’s in the first leg of their EFL Cup Round of 16 clash, Eastern Vale will play host to a strong Team Prodigy side in their ESPZEN Division 4 encounter, with former Vipers scoring legend James Ou in their side.

While Team Questra have been in imperious form in the league this season, their run in the cup has been somewhat suspect, having first beaten OCBC 3-1 at Chua Chu Kang secondary before losing out to Premier Division giants British Club First XI 1-3 in their second group game. The Brits' subsequent win over OCBC was enough to send the Vipers through to the knock out stages, albeit as Group H runners-up.

Questra Vipers winger Addie Tan feels that it is imperative for his side to score in the first leg if they are to qualify for the EFL quarter finals.

“We are the away team this Saturday, so we need to be clinical with our chances and grab that away goal.”

“Having said that, we will also have to be stable at the back which we have improved on tremendously in recent matches.”

Meanwhile, Eastern Vale will look to build on their first win of the season in Division 4 with another 3 points this Sunday, when they too travel to Marsiling Secondary in a match that sees ex-Cactusian James Ou come face to face against a Singapore Vipers team for the first time since his departure from the club seven months ago.

“It will be great to see James again,” quipped midfielder Kelvin Soh.

“He is a good friend and played a big part in Vipers’ early league history. We know what he is capable of, but Team Prodigy isn’t only about James Ou.”

Although the 24 year-old is unlikely to feature this Sunday against Prodigy having yet to recover fully from an ankle injury, he believes it will be an exciting match for the neutrals.

“It will be a great game, I am sure. Eastern Vale plays a different style to Questra, but on our day with our best players we are a formidable side for any opponent.”

Hi Prodigians,

Time flies, yet another year coming to an end and Team Prodigy has progressed remarkably well over the past year from Division 8 a year ago to division 5 currently. With the completion of this season and coming in 2nd place in Div 5, Team Prodigy will once again be challenging itself at the next higher level of ESPZEN League soccer. Im sure all of us are looking forward to this particular moment when we kick off next season once again.

Nevertheless, everyone deserve a pat on the back for going thru one of the toughest seasons in ESPZEN and catch a breather to rest and relax. Hence, we are having a BBQ on 14th Nov(Sat) at Downtown East. For those who have yet to reply, please confirm your attendance soon.

Hi Prodigians,

It is near the end of the year again and like last year, we will be holding the annual BBQ dinner and dance night. This time, it promises to be bigger and better and so far, the date I have in mind is 12th DEC which is a Saturday and the place to hold this glamorous event will be at Aloha Loyang garden view terrace (sorry is not ritz carlton). We can swim, play tennis, mahjong, poker, console games, cycle, or even check out the old changi hospital there =P. At night there will be also be a BBQ and those who like to watch movies or shop can also check out Tampines One or E HUB @ downtown east. We can even organise a friendly on Sunday and travel to the match together! Past and current Prodigians will be invited and feel free to bring your WAGS along or friends/potential future WAGS. It will be a fun filled night with awards/vouchers given out to players who have been outstanding for us throughout 2009.

Just to inform u guys that I will be including the fees for the Champions Cup into everyone's "account". i.e. everyone has to share the cost of the Champions Cup regardless of participation (e.g. last minute fall sick cannot go for match). I think this is the best way to allocate the costs.

The much awaited draw for the 2009 ESPZEN Champions Cup has finally been revealed. Among the many mouth-watering clashes were some that have been touted as potential massacres, including the draw between former two-time champions, International Soccer Academy FC and underdogs Team Prodigy.

International Soccer Academy have been consecutive division champions in the ESPZEN Saturday league season for the past three seasons, finishing above strong teams like Questra Vipers and Simei United. International Soccer Academy is also the only team that boasts the honour of winning the Champions Cup twice. Team Prodigy, on the other hand, are a relatively young team. They have risen quickly through the divisions since making their first appearance in 2008 in ESPZEN Sunday division 9 but are untested and unproven in the bigger competitions. Team Prodigy's performance in previous cup competitions have been dismal, crashing out in the first round of the ESPZEN FA Cup on two occasions.

The Straits Times have exclaimed that this match would be almost impossible for International Soccer Academy to lose: "Despite Team Prodigy's promise and work ethic, they will not be able to match the experience and class of International Soccer Academy. ISA will win this draw effortlessly." Football pundit John Dykes also added: "Look at the players ISA have, they have the best players from all around the world and all their performances have been scarily consistent. Don't get me wrong, I admire Team Prodigy, they have achieved a lot since joining ESPZEN but their players are just not experienced enough for the likes of ISA. Age will also be an important factor. Team Prodigy's average age is years ahead of ISA's, there is no way they will be able to match the fast game with which ISA plays with."

The fans of Team Prodigy however insisted that their team be taken more seriously. Long time fan Matthew Lim said: "Do not rule us out just yet. When we are playing on our day, even teams like ISA will have to work hard to beat us. They are the giants of this tournament but I always believe that upsets are inevitable in cup competitions!" When asked about his thoughts on his team's chances, Team Prodigy's Mick Tan earnestly replied: "Who is International Soccer Academy?"

The match will kick off on the 6th September, Turf City pitch four at 3pm.

Beckham spotted at Prodigy training ground!

It is revealed by a source close to the club that former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar David Beckham was spotted at Team Prodigy training ground at VJC on Monday. Captain Yiyang was leading the Prodigians for the warm up session when the megastar appeared out of the blue to train with the Prodigians for half an hour. It is believed that he was invited by manager Ken who is a ManU fan himself.

As it was more than a year ago since Prodigy last scored direct from a freekick, Beckham gave the starstruck Prodigians a demostration of his trademark freekicks during the training. Out of 10 freekicks he took, 9 went in with Jiahui fully beaten and the last one hit the bar. It was an invaluable experience for most of the players and ManU fan Mick was impressed, " He gave me some tips and I hope it works against Pirates this weekend! "

However, Liverpool fan Alberto Kun was not as enthusiastic, he quipped, " Seriously, I can do better than him! "

Mick: Goals? What goals?

Prodigy all time marksman and last season Division 7 top scorer Mick Tan is currently facing a goal drought as he has yet to open his account for the team this season. However, the laid-back lanky striker refuses to panic, he joked, "Now my job is to create goals for James so that he can win the top scorer award this season! " Indeed, Mick's understanding with James has been the reason why Team Prodigy has won 3 consecutive games to propel to the top of the Division 5. It was his through pass that set James up to open the scoring against Ishkawa FC and last week, he and James created plenty of problems for Y Homeless. Mick added, "As long as the team is winning, it does not matter who scores. I am raring to go this Sunday against the Pirates, if it (the goal) comes it comes, I will not keep thinking about it."

Manager Mentor Kelv C is confident that Mick will score soon, he said, " I believe form is temporary, class is permanent. He will break his duck sooner or later, there is more to his game than just scoring goals. If he is not scoring, he is creating the goals, he is our link between attack and defence. "

Ken: Prodigy can win title

After last Sunday's narrow victory over title contender Y Homeless, utility player cum manager Ken O Shea has declared that Prodigy is good enough to lift the title come November with almost half of the season gone. " We certainly do not expect to lead the table and this is testimonial of the confidence and team spirit at the club currently. We has won 2 difficult games in a row against Madcats and Y Homeless and this has increased the beliefs of the players that we are good enough to beat any team on our day. All the players put in immerse efforts for the team last Sunday and I am really proud of each and everyone. However, the war is still not won yet and we must keep up the standards week in week out just like last season when we put pressure on Simei United until the last game. "

Meanwhile, Team Prodigy has confirmed their participation in the 2009/2010 ESPZEN Champions Cup knockout tournament after the withdrawal of Eastern Vale FC. Team Captain Yiyang is particularly excited at the prospect of facing the big boys, he remarked, " I hope we draw FC 204, it will be a gauge of how far we has come since the days of playing the commandos!" Singaporepools has opened the odds for respective teams of the Champions Cup 2010 and unsurprisingly, Team Prodigy has the highest odds of 1:300 for winning the cup. Nevetheless, Ken has placed a bet of $10 and he cheekily said, " The ball is round, never say never. "

James Ou commits future to Prodigy

IT is reported from Vipernet that James Ou has decided to quit Questra Vipers with immediate effect to concentrate his efforts for Team Prodigy in the current season. In a move that will shock the footballing world, Team Prodigy is set to benefit immensely from the prolific striker's decision to play for the team exclusively in their bid to win Division 5.

At this point of time, James could not be reached for comments but there are speculations that Prodigy manager Ken and mentor Kelvin have put together a salary package that is irresistable. There are also rumours that 2 matches a week for the past year is taking a toll on his body and he is thinking of settling down. Another possibility is that he enjoys playing with the team and has since struck up new friendships with the Prodigians. Defender Weng was surprised upon hearing of James's departure from Questra Vipers, he said, " It is really a shock to me, I did not see it comming honestly and all along I thought Questra Viper is his club. This is equivalent to signing Raul from Real Madrid. But James is a quality player, Vipers' loss will be our gain and I am sure the other players will welcome this news! "

Prodigy captain Yiyang welcomed the news, " I am really glad James commits his immediate future to us and I am sure this will further boost the prestige of the club in drawing top quality players. Morale is now very high at the moment and I can't wait to face Y Homeless this Sunday."

Prodigians to show promotion credentials

TEAM Prodigy resume their league action tomorrow following a 2 weeks break against fellow promotion chaser, Ishkawa FC. They then face current leaders Y Homeless next weekend in another important game which will determine their promotion credentials in Division 5. Sitting 4th in the table, Prodigy cannot afford to drop any points againt Ishkawa as the league positions are very tight at the moment.
Team manager Ken is optimistic ahead of the clash. He said, " We will be going for the win as usual and with players comming back, we will have a stronger squad than the last game. I am confident the players will show their fighting spirits once again and we want a good result before facing off the league leaders next weekend. "
Strikers Mick Tan and James Ou are expected to be back and so are midfield lynchpins Yiyang and Alonso Kun. Keeper Jiahui is also likely to play after his unfortunate injury 2 weeks ago. Will Prodigy put up a performance like the last game against Madcats United?

Prodigy revives season with hard fought win

IT was a match that Prodigy were expected to lose considering that they lost their no.1 keeper Jiahui before the game and had only 12 players (plus 1 more at half time) to choose from on the large PUB pitch.On the other hand, the opponent Madcats United had a huge turnout with 2 nigerians in their ranks with one looking particularly like new man city striker Adebayor. Any lesser team would have surrendered during the game such were the intimidating physical supremacy of the opponents. But Team Prodigy obviously did not read the script as they played with their hearts on their sleeves, particularly in the 2nd half, and produced our best display of the new season. The first half was reminiscence of the soak and strike strategy used by the famous Italian teams in the 90s. Madcats were throwing everything at us in the first half, and had numerous shots. However, Shawn and Wenjing ran a tight ship in defence clearing every single ball flying into the penalty box and the cats were limited to long-distance shots, and they weren't having any luck with those. None came close and our make-shift goalie Ching Weng did not have to make any save in the 1st half. On the other end, Prodigy wingers, Bernard and Weiyang were giving their fullbacks a torrid time with the occasional fastbreaks from midfield.

At half-time, it was evident to us that the way to win the match was to exploit the expansive flanks of the PUB pitch, with our wingers having caused so much trouble to the cats. We had a game plan and boy did we execute it. The second half started, and time and time again we played the ball quickly to the flanks, where our advantage laid. The domination that the cats had in the 1st half began to erode. Eventually, from an opposing corner, CW surprised everyone with the only long kick out to Hongyao who took it down like a pindrop in a stack of hay. With the quick shift of body, he swerved and whacked the ball far right for Bernard who was on a mesmerizing run down the right and after he feint the full back, he unleashed a quick strike. Seconds felt like hours, minutes turned to days as the ball trickled underneath the keeper to beat him at the near post. It was 1-0, much to the delight of the Prodigy fans who were cheering wildly in the stands. Madcats were stunned and as expected, they started to throw everything at the Prodigy defence, including the kitchen sink, but the Prodigy defenders repelled every Madcats attack and we stuck to our game plan. This came to fruition once again when Ken won possession through some very gritty work on the left side within our own half. The ball was quickly released across the pitch to Ali. Showing the deft touch we all know he has, he controlled the ball swiftly and put Brandon through on goal with a perfectly weighted through ball. Brandon did justice to the quality of the through ball by finishing off the move with aplomb by unleashing a drive to the top left corner, to the joy of the players who knew that 3 points were within grasp. However, Madcats were not to be denied and after almost 20 shots, they finally put one on target with 10 minutes remaining. Remembering the Benedetto game, Prodigy started to kill the game off by wasting time and holding on to the ball. There was still some late drama when Chingweng denied them an equaliser following a freekick outside the box by tipping the ball over the bar. The last few minutes seem like an eternity as the fans were waiting for the ref to blow the whistle while Madcats were throwing every man forward.

In the end, the Prodigians held on for this memorable victory which totally wiped off last Sunday's defeat by Benedetto. The joy on every Prodigian's face after the match came from knowing that each and everyone of them had ran their lungs out for each other, for the team, that the team had fought a war and emerged victorious through a well executed game plan. It was pure bliss. Let us use this performance as the benchmark for every Sunday now if we are to challenge for promotion. Nil Sine Soccere!

TEAM Prodigy could not end their Bukit Timah pitch jinx despite leading 3-1 with 5mins to go. To add to their woes, keeper Jiahui suffered concussion after collision with a DSTA striker and he sit out the entire 2nd half in a daze, not remembering anything about the first half. Weiyang's brilliant solo effort gave us the equaliser following a lacklastre first half.

An improved 2nd half display saw Prodigy took the lead through Hongyao's header at the far post following Bernard's cross and Hongyao increased our lead when he was left unmarked inside the box and he duly slotted the ball into the net. Sandwiched in between was a missed penalty by Yiyang who rattled the post after Benard was tripped in the area. However, some miscommunications at the back in the last few mins allowed DSTA to share the spoils with our 2nd consecutive draw against them. In the end, the match result was of least importance following Jiahui's injury and we hope he will recover soon!

Team Prodigy face tough season ahead

Will this be a common sight during the new season?

Following their brilliant season in Division 7, Team Prodigy now face a daunting and more challenging season ahead of them as the level of soccer will definitely step up with their promotion to Division 5. Grouped with teams which have won championships before such as Benedetto Utd, Y Homeless FC, Ishkawa FC and other established teams such as British Exile and Singapore Pirates which have all experienced promotions before, one would feel this division would be more fiercely contested as compared to last season.

Despite the difficulties ahead, Team manager Ken believes that his team have what it takes to pose a challange to any team as the players have grown together through thick and thin in the past 3 seasons and the camaraderie built up will pull them through in difficult times.

He said: " We must not forget that we are a quality team ourselves and we have players who can hurt teams if we play to our strengths. With 58 goals scored last season, our strikeforce of James, Mick and Hongyao will score against any team in the whole of ESPZEN. "

"We are alot more experienced than when we first joined the league and now the team has grown stronger too as everyone is more familiar with the team's style of play."

When asked on the reacquaintance with old time nemesis, Benedetto United, Ken remains diplomatic: " We are looking forward to playing them again after our titanic tussle 2 seasons ago. It is good to see how far we have come since season 9 and I believe Mick has some unfinished business with them. Whatever the result, I hope the game is played in a sporting way. It is still early in the season and the pressure is not as much as last time and we just hope we will play well, that is the least I can hope for."

On the transfer front, Prodigy has secured the signature of former ACJC defender Kee Yi Arn for the season after he impressed during the recent preseason friendlies. A visibly delighted Yi Arn quipped: " I am delighted to join Team Prodigy as I have heard of good things about them from Brandon. I hope to be able to help the team win more trophies in future! "

Indeed, Prodigy will need the contributions and commitments of every single player if they are to enjoy a season as successful as last season.

Good news guys! Team Prodigy will be playing in Division 5 in the new season!! Football United FC will be playing in division 6 in exchange.

Also, ESPZEN has proposed medals for the champions and runner ups for each division and they have emailed us asking if we want to get medals. 18 medals will be awarded and additonal orders will cost $12 each.

Reminder: friendly is this saturday 5pm at Victoria Secondary (Marine Parade). Those who cant make it let us know pls. Thanks.

Team Prodigy crashed to a 3-1 defeat at Henderson Secondary last Sunday. We put up a brave fight but we just could not cope with our lack in numbers. We played most of the first half with nine men with a 4-3-1 formation and bravely kept Football United FC at bay. Unfortunately we couldnt hold Football United FC back in the second half as our players were drained of energy from all the running. Football FC scored two goals in quick succession. Their third goal was a dissappointment: the referee blew for a penalty that we felt was pretty harsh. Much to our surprise however, our players were not knocked down but instead fought to get a goal back. We actually created a good number of chances, with Brandon, Bernard, Yiarn and Hongyao all coming agonizingly close to scoring. It was however Kelvin's stint at a striking role that led to our goal. I have no idea how to describe how we scored it, I can only say Kelvin's presence threw Football United's FC defender into lobing the ball over his helpless goal keeper.

And to add salt onto our wounds, Football United FC were awarded a place in division 5 of ESPZEN's season 11 while our hopes were dashed as we were left with yet another one-division promotion. Team Prodigy shot themselves in the foot with a poor turn up! Let's hope this will be a blessing in disguise =)

Dear All Sunday League Season 11 Teams

Congratulations your team is officially registered in our Sunday League Season 11 Tournament.

A number of new teams are joining ESPZEN for the first time this season, most of which have joined the premier amateur football league in Singapore from other social leagues around the island.

Interestingly ESPZEN has witnessed the largest ever number of teams folding, or merging between season 10 and 11 which accounts for the disappearance of some familiar teams ie Real Madras, Bakar, Italia, Official 10, 6yrd box for example. FC204 and FC Protege have also merged to combine into one team in season 11.

As a consequence some teams have received “boosted promotion” and in other examples some teams have received auto promotion to the higher divisions.

Band of brothers?!

Hi All,

Since its the end-of-season, just wanted to thank everyone for a great season we had in Division 7. We had a great run, regardless of our defeat to Simei Utd in the last match. I'm sure everyone agrees that we lost to a better team and they deserve to be Champions of Div 7, although I feel a bit cheated when they told us that they are not taking part next season (then they should have let us win right!).

But anyway I think overall throughout the whole season, we did really well and we all deserve a pat on the back for everyone's contribution one way or another (including the WAGs for the support and the photographs).

I honestly am looking forward to the start of the next season, because I think we got a great thing going on here with our team and our current players. Everyone seems to get along really well with everyone else and we dont scold or complain (much) if anyone makes mistakes or we lose a game - that is really hard to come by these days. Whichever new players joins our team next season, I hope that this comaraderie doesn't change.

On a more immediate note, has anyone found opponents for a friendly this coming Sunday yet? If not, I propose we book an astro-pitch, either 5-a-side or 7-a-side and we can just have a nice friendly kick around. I think it would be awesome to play AGAINST each other for once and to test out how good we really are. Haha. I know turf city has some pretty good 7-a-side astros which is quite fun! I tried before. But we have to book early because its really popular.

Season Finale

Hey all

Please take note that the match against Simei United FC will be at Turf City pitch 4, 1pm, NOT 11am! Espzen informed us a couple of days back. It isnt a good pitch, I tried to convince Espzen that last minute notice is not appreciated and that this is an important match to both teams, and should be played on a good quality pitch, but they wouldnt budge even with my 'well' crafted arguments. owells.

Truthfully speaking, the odds of winning the title are against us because we will need all three points to keep ourselves in the title race. And I think we all know deep down that Simei is a quality side. But I think that while it is important for us to recognize the quality they have, we must realise that we have been playing quality football as well. And we have put away teams by scoring a total of 56 goals, that is some record mind you. My point being: if everyone one of us goes into the game with the desire to win (just like Olympique a couple games back) and the hunger to fight for every ball, we have no reason to doubt our chances of winning this game.

Still, I hope that everyone realises that this isnt life and death. Its much more important that we ENJOY the game. By playing fair, and playing our hearts out, and enjoying the excitement of playing against a good quality side like Simei! Hope everyone can come down this sunday and get soaked in the sizzling (in more ways than one) atmosphere.

To cut the long story short. We have to get back to winning ways asap considering that our last ESPZen match was 5 weeks ago. Simei Utd is fast catching up and at the rate they are going, our last match with them on 7th June could potentially be the title decider. But lets not look so far ahead first and repeat the mistakes of last season. We still have 3 matches comming up to get our momentum going and if we beat Red Star tmr, we will be assured of 2nd place which is already a marked improvement from the previous 2 seasons. However, I am sure most of us would treat 2nd place as a disappointment considering that we led the division 7 table for so long.

This is a chance of a lifetime for many of us to actually win something and a place in Prodigy history for years to come. So I hope that everyone will turn up for the comming weeks until 7th June to fight to the end. We have come so far, it will be a total waste to let go of all the efforts we put in in the earlier games.

Just like to announce a few things:

1) Hua Kun, do you have a team we can play against on the 3rd May? I think we had better not go another week without playing. We need a friendly! If you cant get a friendly let us know, then maybe Chingweng can get Dave to help us or get DSTA FC for the friendly rematch.

2) To those who havent paid the league fees, kindly pay up soon, to me! =)

3) I dont know how long more my back will hurt, will play as soon as I can.

Prodigy on verge of securing sponsorship!

Sources close to Prodigy can reveal that the management is close to agreeing a 2 years sponsorship with a start-up company in the health-care industry. It is believed that the sponsor is willing to pay for Prodigy's league fees for the next 3 seasons provided that they archive promotion every season. On top of that, they require that the company name be advertised on the team jersey and also on ESPZEN and the team's website. Players are also required to recommend the company's products to their relatives or friends and to spread the goodwill.

A spokeman for the unnamed company revealed, " I am a football fan too and certainly, Team Prodigy is the up and comming team in ESPZEN and I am sure they will be challanging at the higher divisions sooner rather than later. Hence, I think it will be a great exposure for our company's products. I will also be comming down to watch the team play on certain occasions and if possible, I would like to have the chance to play for the team too ! "

Just like Rafa Benitez at Liverpool, Prodigy manger Ken has issued the challange of winning the last 6 games in order to clinch the first major trophy of Prodigy history. Team Prodigy is now 5 points clear at the top but their title hopes were dealt a severe blow with leading scorer James out for the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder injury. ESPZEN Div 7 looks to be a 3 horses race just like the EPL with Simei Utd and Red Star Semangat still breathing down Prodigy's neck. What Prodigy can least offer to do is to fall into a lull as they have now established themselves as the team to beat in the division after their outstanding 5 games winning streak.

He has urged his side to continue the momentum and to focus on their own results, not results of their challangers, with no margin of error as the campagin reaches the climax.

" James no doubt will be a big miss for us as he has bailed us out on several difficult situations earlier this season.

"However, I expect the others to step up their games now as we are now closing in on the final stretch

Hey guys,

I think this sunday will be tough for us. Not only because we're missing James, Chingweng etc but also because I believe Jazz FC will be thirsty for revenge after how they lost last sunday. Expect them to start the game with all guns blazing, just like how Interstar started against us a couple weeks ago. So ppl, lets prepare ourselves for a rough game this sunday and make sure we go into the game with the determination to win the ball and win the game.

Another thing, pls bring your GREY AND RED jerseys this sunday. For those who do not have the red jersey, kindly bring a red shirt, im sure the ref won't bother to penalize us for that.

Special Kudos to Team Prodigy's MOTM Jiahui who has freaking played in every single league match since day 1. Recently, he has somehow got addicted to saving penalties (ironically, Prodigy is also addicted to giving away penalties lately!) With the season reaching the halfway mark, Team Prodigy find themselves leading Division 7 by three points albeit with Simei United having a game in hand. Certainly, winning breeds confidence and with such a run, Team Prodigy will feel they can beat anyone even Manchester United or Liverpool! This season, they are among the highest scoring teams in ESPZEN with an average of 4 goals a game and it is this factor that player manager Ken believes transform the team from a pretender to a genuine title challanger. He said, " We are playing very well at the moment and most importantly, we are scoring as a team. The attendence has been great during the matches and this boosts the morale and performance of the team for every game. Also, there are more options to change things around when things are not going well. "

A quick look at the stats proves that the manager has a point. This season there are more players contributing to the scoring chart and the midfielders are chipping in with their fair share of goals to lessen the burden on the strikers. Tomorrow and next week, they face a double date with Jazz FC and the team welcomes back self exiled Alonso Kun who will add more bite to midfield although credit also has to be given to Ken O'Shea who did a great job in the centre of the park during his absence.

Team Prodigy also face a mini crisis at the back with both Shawn and Bahrin out, but MM Chua is adamant he has sufficient cover for them, " We have Wenjing, Wilson, Weng, Weiyi the 4 Ws who can still do a job for us at the back, so there are no worries. I expect the team to play for the 3 points again as I would not want us to slip up due to complacency."

Match Report against INTERSTAR FC

TEAM PRODIGY’s ruthless demolition of INTERSTAR FC at Marsiling Secondary on Sunday ensured their current position on top of MATADOR Sunday League Division 7 remains firm. Prodigy now lead their closest rivals Simei United FC by 3 points following a postponement of the latter’s match against Sparta Cowboys FC. The stands were a spectacle of toddlers and mothers on one end and WAGS on the other. Clearly Prodigians and Interstar players are in different phases of their lives, but on the pitch, both teams are equally focused on the match and the match only, though I must add that it was rather cute of a Interstar player to be warming up with his (must have been around) 3 year old son=)

The match kicked off brightly on a beautiful astro pitch in different shades of green. Merely 2 minutes into the game, a long pass from Weng on the left found James after Inter’s defender made a mess out of it. The prolific striker opted for precision over power to curl the ball into goal but it ricocheted off the right pole instead. Interstar’s marauding wingers proved a handful for Prodigians to cope and there sure were a few nervy moments at the back. In the 6th minute, Inter got their first clear chance to go one goal up but the player miskicked with the goal at his mercy.

GOAL! The first goal of the match arrived in the 8th minute. Midfield maestro Ken pumped a high ball to James who easily shook off his marker before coolly slotting the ball pass the keeper. What a way to mark his comeback into the team (as if he needed any!).
Despite taking the lead, Prodigy never quite seemed in full control. In fact, it took a brilliant twelfth minute reflex save by Jiahui from close range to keep the scoreline unchanged. On came Nigel in the 14th minute for Longkun who lamented that he was off-form and Wilson for Kel with the former taking his familiar position on the left while Weng shifted to the right.

GOAL! Prodigy’s lead lasted only 10 minutes as a sloppy display at the back allowed Inter back into the game. Failure to deal with Inter’s cross first time proved fatal as they duly grabbed the opportunity to send the toddlers wild.
Midway through the first half, Derek substituted Ali on right. Minutes later, Weng launched a cross field pass to Bernard on the left of the penalty box. He trapped the ball neatly and laid it back for Mick whose shot just scrapped the post. What a great build up from the back! Following this near miss, Bahrain took matters into his own hands (or rather feet) as he hurled a shot from the halfway line which tested the keeper’s alertness.

GOAL! Yet another of James’ classic (don't we have an archive already?)! A quick free kick taken by Wilson found James through on goal and he ole-ed the onrushing keeper in style.

The second half began with Kel coming on for Weng as right back and Longkun for Ken to marshal the midfield. A tactical change saw Wilson partnering Bahrain as centre backs, while Weiyi replaced Wenjing. Wingers Ali and Brandon came back on for Derek and Bernard.
Five minutes from the restart, a goal mouth scramble had the entire entourage of Prodigy supporters up on their feet! James had the last touch but failed to connect cleanly and it was cleared off the line by Inter.

GOAL! Kudos to Prodigy strikers’ never say die spirit, they continued to pressure Inter in their own half and James managed to dispossess a defender. He proceeded to round keeper to slide in goal from acute left angle.

GOAL! WHAT A GOAL! NIGEL VOLLEYED A BULLET FROM THE LEFT TO THE TOP RIGHT CORNER WHICH NEARLY BURST THE NET! PHWAH!! GOAL OF THE SEASON CONTENDER!

Prodigy was by now 4-1 up and looking to rest some tired legs. In Bernard’s words, "Of course must sub la! This kinda match got chance to score one!" On came Bernard and Derek for Ali and Brandon, and Ken for Longkun. Wilson gave away a penalty in the 31st minute. Inter shot straight down the channel perhaps predicting Jiahui to go either way but he stood firm as ever to put the away for a throw in. Prodigian's misery for goals conceded despite the clear advantage was clearly evident.

GOAL! A quick counter, where Prodigy is always at its deadliest, found Ken with the ball in midfield. He was momentarily spoilt for choice with James, Derek and Mick on the run to support. The player/manager rightly opted for a short pass to James who in turn slid the ball to Mick to slot home for the fifth goal for Prodigy.
Highlight of the match must be the clash of the titans! Bahrain and a Inter player both went full blooded for the ball which resulted in the latter catching Bahrain on his left knee. Stay tuned for the poll results on your right for the number of times Bahrain cursed=) Last attack of the game saw Bernard twisting and turning in the penalty area, His prophecy almost came true but the woodwork denied him of his much longed-for goal. A minute later, the referee blew for full time without taking into account injury time - not that it had mattered anyway=)

Interstar will be gearing up for revenge following their lopsided 10-0 loss to Team Prodigy in the first game of the season, back then, they were abit rusty and their lack of match fitness was evident as the fitter Prodigy ran rings around them. However since that debacle, Interstar FC has put together a string of decent results to pull themselves off the foot of the table.

At the other end, Team Prodigy has had their best start to a season in ESPZEN and hopes to extend their winning streak to 4 games. However, team manager Ken is taking nothing for granted and he warns, " Complacency led to our downfall last season and certainly, I am drumming into the players this season to treat every opponent equally, be it Simei or Cowboys, we have to settle into our game quickly and ensure we maintain our focus of getting the 3 points. "

" We have not achieved anything yeh, the title is decided in May and I still believe so as Simei Utd will not want to drop any points either; so we must keep winning and see where it will take us in May."

Lack of interest in the JB trip has forced MM Chua to cancel the outing plan and he rues the missed chance of getting the players together to enjoy a session of go karting which he thinks will help his team relieve the stress of football. He said: " I was thinking of sponsoring the team to go karting but it seems that they are not really keen on the idea, so I am afraid that I have to find something else for them another time when the fixture allows for it. "

Meanwhile tonight, half of the Prodigy team will be cheering for Liverpool while the other half will be cheering for Man Utd as most Prodigians are either a liverpool or Manu supporter, with only one Arsenal and Newcastle fan as far as the author knows. So may the best team win today and come tomorrow, we will all be rooting for the same team, the red of Prodigy instead =) Nil Sine Soccere!

Match Report against Red Star Semangat

TEAM PRODIGY’s convincing 3-1 victory over Red Star Semangat at First Toa Payoh Secondary on Sunday, coupled with their superior goal difference brought them deservingly back to the top of MATADOR Sunday League Division 7.

Neatly taken goals from Brandon, Hong Yao and Mick, albeit a brief fight back from Semangat in the second half, helped seal the game for Prodigy. Although the match was marred by some poor (read: atrocious!!!) refereeing decisions, pitch invasion (!!!) and a few bust ups, cool heads from on and off the pitch helped keep the situation under control.

Barely 2 minutes from kick off, Prodigy’s centre back Shaun gave away a free kick with what seemed like a legitimate tackle outside the penalty area. All Semangat could come up with was a meek shot at goal and Jiahui hardly broke a sweat. Prodigy swiftly launched their first attack from the goalkick. Mick’s shot seemed to be heading into the top right corner of the net until it was palmed to safety by Semangat’s keeper. Fired up by Mick’s effort, Prodigy clicked into top gear and never looked back. A goalmouth scramble in the 9th minute lead to a shot by Hong Yao that was placed just wide. Minutes later Bernard came close with a shot on his right foot, to the wonderment of those at the sideline. Brandon then came on for the animated Bernard who was complaining his feet was burning and Derek for Ali midway into the first half.

GOAL! A brilliant pass by Longkun from the midfield found Brandon in space on the left. Brandon’s burst of pace and supreme ball control proved too much for the last man to handle and he calmly slotted the ball into the net.

In the 27th minute, Wilson substituted Kel, who must have had a great time (wo)man marking the only female player on the pitch. At this point, it was in the WAGS professional judgement that the possession must be 65-35 or better to Team Prodigy, and they were more than glad to be supporting the guys in grey. A minute or so later, Ken who has been a nuisance to Semangat right from the start burned not one, not two but THREE Semangat players to thread the ball cleverly to Mick. The latter unselfishly laid it for Hong Yao who fired the shot first time just over the bar.

GOAL! Two minutes before the stroke of halftime, Hong Yao was put through one on one by a smart flick by Mick (it rhymes! Haha!) to curl the ball to the right bottom, beyond the outstretched arms of the keeper. It looked a tad offside to the WAGS though. But given the referee’s 1001 wrong offside decisions earlier and later, Prodigy would gladly take that.

The second half kicked off with anticipation for more goals by the WAGS. I mean why not, given Prodigy’s exceptional first half performance. Kel substituted Weng at right back, Ali came back on for Derek, Hong Yao was slotted into midfield to replace Ken and Brandon partnered Mick upfront. A cross field free kick from the left taken by Wilson found Ali sprinting towards the far post but just missed connecting on what could have been the third goal of the match.

GOAL! Instead, that moment came in the 45th minute. After some neat interplay by Prodigy’s cheeky trio of Brandon, Bernard and Mick in the penalty box, Mick tricked the defender as he faked to shoot before unleashing a real shot into goal.

Ten minutes later, the blazing afternoon sun took a toll on Hong Yao and he was promptly replaced by Player/Manager Ken. Despite the three goal margin, it was simply not in Prodigy’s character to sit back. Immediately, Brandon was put through yet again but shot just over.

GOAL! Over at the other end, Semangat’s pursuit for their first goal was rewarded after a lovely chip over Jiahui who, to his credit, did track back but in vain.

Given Prodigy’s 2 goal advantage, they had the luxury to tinker the squad and rest players for the next match. On came Weiyi for Wilson, who had been rock solid as Prodigy’s left back throughout the match. Then the unexpected happened! PITCH INVASION! (Pls see video below) By now, both teams were increasingly frustrated by the referee’s inconsistency (or consistently bad calls) on both ends. Notably, Ken got booked for being tackled just because he did not roll 3.5 rounds on the ground and scream until the entire Kim Keat is made aware of the match going on, and Bahrin was let off on a mistimed lunging tackle with no intention to play the ball (Heng ah!). In addition, Bernard and Mick were penalized for their superior pace over the defenders and were signaled offside in what seemed like the referee’s own weird interpretation of the offside rule. In yet another bizarre incident, Weiyi was forced off the pitch as his boots gave way in mid air?!?!?! Wilson came back on for Weiyi while Weng took the right back position from Manager Mentor Kel. This entertaining match eventually concluded with the last clear chance of the match by Semangat that was cleared off the line by the ever alert Wilson ala Vidic.

Next up is the titanic and juicy clash against red star Semangat. Team Prodigy must re-focus on their efforts against this veteran Div 7 team whose fortunes have rose since their playoff effort against KNV6. Consisting of players from their early 30s to early 20s, Red Star has a good blend of youth and experience. In this season's voyage in Div 7, Red Star has shown to be no roll over judging by their form which has been unbeaten so far and has conceded the least goals so far.

In fact, they are the TEAM to beat and will prove a severe testing for Prodigy. Team Prodigy definitely needs to improve on their previous performances to gain anything out of this clash. Something got to break too as the division 7 most prolific attack meets the meanest defence.

This match is specially arranged to provide more playing time for 2nd stringers and also a relaxed environment to play in. Current players confirmed are Mick, Ching Weng, Ken, Weiyi, Derrick, Bahrin ( keeper ), Wenjing, Brandon + friend, Ali plus Bahrin's 3 friends. Final Count: 13

Match Report: Team Prodigy 2 - 1 Suave Fusion

First 10-15min
PRODIGIANS edged out a thrilling and tense 2-1 victory over Suave Fusion FC to return to the top of ESPZEN League Division 7.

AS with all Prodigian’s matches, it took the players a while to start up and get their engine going. Suave, who had displayed their commitment by arriving at the pitch 20 minutes before the match to warm up and kick about duly capitalized on the lack of focus and created wave after wave of attack. Perhaps the Liverpudlians amongst the Prodigians were badly affected by the EPL loss the night before to Boro which dented their (in the first place non-existent) title hopes further, or maybe the Man U fans are just too excited and hyped up over their League Cup clash with Spurs later in the night, Team Prodigy struggled to string together what would normally be routine training ground passes. As Prodigy soaked up the pressure from the opponents and attempt to launch their trademark through passes and swift counter attack, the game turned somewhat scrappy with most of the action condensed in the midfield area. Suave did not make the most of their better possession and were goal shy, wasting a number of set pieces, to the relief of Prodigy.

Sub 10 min:
Ching Weng for Kelvin who pulled a muscle on his ermm ass? Hahaha! A loud banter was heard on the pitch when news of that filtered through the team.

25 min
Sensing some tired legs in Suave’s players, Kelvin made four clever substitutions to inject more pace into the lackluster team display. Along came James, Bernard, Ali and Ken for Brandon, Hongyao, Nigel and Derek. It was a brilliant stroke of genius and having soaked up all the pressure, Team Prodigy is now looking for the sucker punch. Prodigy began to play with a greater sense of urgency to search for that all important goal before halftime.

30 min
Prodigy’s first real chance came to the feet of Ali after he found himself one on one with the keeper on the right following a clever (or taiko) backheel by James. However, his near post shot went just agonizingly wide to the dismay of the team and the army of WAGs.

34 min
Prodigy had another glorious opportunity to go 2-0 up. Ali left his marker for dead on the left of the penalty box and unselfishly opted to put the ball across the goal mouth for Bernard who was lurking at the far post. The pace of the pass took Bernard by surprise and he uncharacteristically failed to connect cleanly with the ball rolling just wide.

38 min
Minutes later, it was Prodigy’s evergreen striker Mick who came close on scoring. After taking the ball down with supreme close control, he launched a shot from the left despite a desperate sliding block by Suave’s (big? No, I mean HUGEEEE) skipper which flew beyond the fingertips of the keeper. But the woodwork stood in the way on what would have marked the first goal of the match. Seeing the keeper pick up the ball from behind the net and becoming increasingly frustrated at his defenders, Prodigy turned more committed towards their attack and found themselves slowly but surely gaining momentum on the match.

True enough, James ended Prodigy’s search for that elusive goal (what’s new?). Upon receiving a pass from midfield, James easily outpaced and outmuscled Suave’s last man and smashed a shot which almost burst the roof of the net, leaving the keeper with no chance at all. In his trademark goal celebration, James dedicated the goal to his girlfriend who was, by than, ecstatic at the sideline.

Prodigy went into half time deservingly 1-0 up.

2ND Half
The second half began rather similarly as with the first, with the lime green tide pushing forward for the equalizer.

47 min
Within minutes of restart, Suave made the most out of the first clear opening of the half. A perfectly weighted lobbing cross from the right found a Suave player who was played onside by Kelvin. Prodigy eventually paid the price for failing to their footing on the match. Score stood at 1-1 and the match was getting more open and entertaining for the spectators.

66 min
Another mistake on the left saw Suave with a shot opportunity. Thankfully keeper Jia Hui was on the alert and he saved superbly with a full dive to the left, putting the ball out for a corner kick.

75 min
Having been under the cosh of Suave for large periods of the 2nd half, Nigel found space on the left, after a neat one two with Ching Weng and Derek resulted in the former delivering him with a pin point inch perfect pass. Nigel, spotting the keeper off his line, instinctively took the golden opportunity presented and lobbed the keeper on his left foot. Crisp passing from the midfield found Thian in the penalty area with the ball and two defenders fast closing in on him. However they failed to deal adequately with Thian’s nifty footwork and brought him down, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot. Perhaps the referee could have waited a few more seconds to play advantage as the ball eventually found Bernard who crashed it into the net. Nevertheless, James stepped up (although Jia Hui, urged on by his defenders and players on the sideline, was already jogging forward, indicating his desire to score his first goal for Prodigy) to take the spot kick but it flew over the crossbar.

Prodigy was on the back foot for most of the last minutes of the match. In true Prodigy spirit, players by the sideline were relentlessly urging the players on to keep their focus and heads up. The WAGs in contrast were cool as cucumber, looking pretty as always. The match ended 2-1 to Prodigy, with the league title very much still in sight.

Team Prodigy FC has a chance to reclaim top spot as they entertain Suave Fusion FC at Henderson Secondary tomorrow. They will be gunning for another 3 points to put pressure on pacesetters, Red Star Sermangat and Simei United who will not be playing this weekend. However, it will not be too easy against a Suave Fusion team which will be fired up after their 4-0 loss to Simei United last weekend. As the saying goes, a wounded animal is at its most dangerous and Prodigy manager Ken has to make sure his players maintain their momentum.

He warns: "We should not underestimate Suave Fusion despite their result against Simei United last week. They will be determined to beat us this week to prove that the result was a fluke. We must carry on from where we left off last week if we want to get a good result again."

Keeper Jiahui believes that consistency is the key to winning the title: " We must use last season experience to remind ourselves not to slacken off. We need to take one game at a time and not to think too far ahead as last season we made a mistake of focusing only on the Benedetto game and dropped too many points against other teams toward the end. "

Manager Mentor Chua adds: " With the game at 1pm, I hope we get more players back this weekend as we really need everyone's commitment if we want to do something special this season. It is really a team effort. "

James powered Prodigy past Olympique

It was a familiar name on the scoresheet as James once again demonstrated his scoring prowess to help Prodigy to a precious victory on Sun to revive their title challange. On a day when only 13 players turned out with regular midfielders Kun, Nigel and Yiyang absent, there was apprehension before the match as Prodigy only had Long Kun as their recognised central midfielder.

However, the Prodigians were not to be deterred and once the match started, there was only going to be one winner as Prodigy was quicker to every ball and had the better chances before James put them infront in the first half. The game finished with 13 exhausted players as everyone gave their all under the hot weather to defend the lead. Shawn, who picked up the MOTM award after the game was particularly outstanding as he provided the stability and organisation at the back which was solely missing against Simei United.

Manager Mentor Chua who was totally shagged out after the game praised the team spirit: " We gave our all and the 3 points are really a boost to our morale considering the manner of our defeat last week. The whole team played well and special mentions to James, Longkun, Shawn and Jiahui who raised their performances."

Manager Ken O'Shea also praised the quality of the team depth: " Players like Derrick, Mick, Brandon and Ali give us the versatility and flexibility which enable us to cope with injuries as most of them can play in different positions if required. I wouldn't swap any of these players for a million bucks! "

The Bulldozer Bahrin was equally impressed with James, he quipped: " Sometimes I feel he is the Fenarndo Torres/Steven GerraRd for our team, he always delivers when we are in need of inspiration."

High praise indeed for James who also shot into 2nd place for the Division 7 top scorer award alongside Mick. Team Prodigy now has the most prolific partnership in Division 7 with 8 goals between them in 4 games played.

When it rains, it certainly pours as Team Prodigy has been hit with an injury crisis ahead of their crucial league game against Olympique Singapore. Veteran leftback ChingWeng is expected to be out following work commitments while Prodigy's Alonso Kun will also be unavailable for selection for a substantial amount of time. In addition, Wilson and new signing, Thian are also still sidelined with injuries. However, Manager Ken is still feeling upbeat on his team chances tomorrow despite the fact that Prodigy has a bad record against foreign expariate teams with losses to Legends, British Council and Barclay Capital in their 3 seasons in ESPZEN.

He say, " We need to forget about last Sunday and go for the three points against Olympique. I believe we still have other members of the team who will step up to the challange. We still have Nigel and Yiyang who have been ever present this season and have been doing a great job for our team. For leftback position, we still have cover in Ken, Derrick and Weiyi so we still can field a strong team this Sunday."

He warns, "Olympique will be a tough nut to crack, most of them are experienced and they will certainly play a possession game, so we must pressurise them and try to keep the ball and play to our strength which is to break with our swift counter attacks through the flanks or the centre to James. "

Prodigy fans in despair

After a whooping 15 goals scored during the first 2 matches, the firepower has dried up just like the weather these days as Prodigy hit blanks in 2 demoralising losses to Barclay Capital FC and Simei United respectively. First they were dumped out of the cup and now their promotion hopes are dealt a severe blow as their first position in the league is relinquished following a lacklustre performance yeh again against a talented Simei United team.

During these difficult times, manager Ken admits that the team has to stick together to grind out results and stick to basics. He said: "We seem to lose our confidence going forward and we are not playing together as a unit. Our final ball into the box is lacking and hence, our strikers are not scoring. We need to play it simple and move around more. I noticed during a freekick, our players are not making runs and standing static on the field. We need to make more off the ball runs in future. " Manager Mentor Chua adds: "We were outclassed and we lack the passion and hunger to win as Simei United and I noticed some players were just going through the motions in the first half. We need to find back the passion to win games starting next week against Olympique if we want to challange for the title. "

Following the defeat, Singaporepools has now increased the odds of Team Prodigy winning the division 7 title and they are now 2nd favourite behind Simei United. The payout has increased from 1.80 to 2.50 now.

The kallang roar awaits Prodigy

The Espzen FA cup kicks off tomorrow with Divison 7 Team Prodigy facing Division 5 Barclay Capital FC. The current Espzen Champion Cup winners Jaguar FC awaits the winner and such an incentive will certainly pump up the adrenaline of both sides. However, Manager Ken is taking nothing for granted and hope for a good run in the cup following last year's first round loss to Legends FC via penalty shootout. " This is the cup, anything can happen, I hope we can give a good account of ourselves against higher division opponents. This is a good gauge of our standards and we will reach there someday. "

None other player is looking forward to the match than Prodigy's speedy winger Bernard who wants to wipe away the memory of last year's penalty miss during the shootout. He said: " I am excited about it. I have waited for this for a year and I will take the penalty again if it goes to the shootout."

League Fees

Hi all,

This is regarding our league + cup fees. The fees for the league is $2,100. And the fees for the cup is $150 per match. As of this moment, we should expect to pay a total of $2,250 for this season (should we win the cup game this sunday, we will have to pay $150 more).

We have already made the first installment ($600) in December 2008. Kelvin, Weiyi, Chingweng and myself paid for that already. However, the cup fees are due on the 4th Feb 2009 and the second installment for the league fees, in mid Feb 2009.

Therefore, I would like to suggest that we settle the league fees now. I think we should try to share the costs equally. I presume there are no objections to this! There are 21 of us in this team which means every one should be responsible for approximately $107 in fees (the balance if we play more cup matches, we can easily settle another time).

May I request that you guys pass me $107 in cash the earliest sunday that you are playing on, or I can sms u my bank account no. should you prefer to do an internet transfer (but do let me know).

Team Prodigy will be looking for a good result against league debutants Spartan Cowboys. Team spirit is high after their recent run of form and much will depend on their double strikeforce of Mick and James, a deadly combi that should strike fear in any opponent. It is expected that with the match being played at 1pm under the hot afternoon sun, Team Prodigy will need as many bodies as possible to give them options and advantage over the opponents. Defender lynchpin Bahrin sums up: " Tomorrow is an important game, just like Liverpool vs Chelsea, it will shape our season and we want to have a good headstart. "

When asked by the reporter of his knack of conceding penalties, he blasted back: " I only play to win the ball and the game, in life, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, so you have to accept the outcome of your actions, I will not hold back in future if I feel the tackle is there to be won. "

Prodigians edge win in thriller

Team Prodigy claimed their seventh win in eight matches in a friendly arranged on CNY eve last Sunday. Goals from Bernard, Wilson and Brandon put the Prodigians 3-1 comfortably ahead. However, they conceded two set piece goals in quick succession to level the game at 3-3. Team Prodigy responded almost immediately with a brillant solo goal by James to put the Prodigians ahead again. The game was fiercely fought and the fact that Jiahui was nominated man of the match is testimony to the quality of the opposition. His double sliding tackle in the dying moments of the match drew much applause and praise. Manager Mentor Chua, happy with the result, said: " It was a good match and a good work out for the team. Credit to Toa Payoh Reds who never gave up. Their set pieces certainly posed problems for us and that is something we have to work on. I hope we can learn quickly before we face even more experienced teams in the league. Im also happy at the commitment my players have shown. The turn out was excellent and if we can keep this up, there is reason to be hopeful this season."

Referee Dave, when asked about some of his dubious offside decisions, quipped:
"It is the CNY, give them chance la, your team is too fast for my eyes la. "

In other breaking news, Diadora announced a new sponsorship deal with Team Prodigy. A spokesmans for them said: "We are really excited about this new deal. We will be supplying Team Prodigy with our next generation soccer jerseys for the rest of the season; We are looking to sponsor other big name teams with these new jerseys later this year but we saw the potential in Team Prodigy and jumped, really, at the chance of working with them. We wish them all the best for the rest of the season. "

Prodigy Open Season With a Bang

History was made last Sun as Prodigy showed their title credentials by banging 10 goals without reply past Interstar. The result was Prodigy's biggest win in their entire club history and it eclipsed the 7-0 trot of Primero FC last season. Indeed, such result was not envisable 10 years ago when Prodigy was playing the likes of Tub Thumper and A@W team and struggling for results. It certainly shows how far Prodigy has evolved with the new generation of players that has since showed they have plenty of flair and tenacity. The hunger to win and to redeem themselves for a poor finish last season was evident the moment Mick opened the account and every single players played their heart out as if it was a playoff game.

Despite the euphoria, manager Ken is determined not to be carried away by the big win on his managerial debut and warns against complaceny, " Yes, we played well and and it was a day when everything clicked into place, however, I would rather we win 1-0 every game than to win 10-0 and to lose the next game. We must build on this win and not to get complacent and continue to grind out results every week."

Asked whether Prodigy has learnt anything from last season, he said. " Ya, I hope everyone did as we need to remember the season is a marathon and the most consistent team wins the league. This season, we have a bigger squad to cope with but I still hope everyone can turn out as this will be a team effort."

First time scorer ChingWeng also has the accolade for being the first defender to score a competitive goal for Prodigy since 2008 and he could not hide his glee after the match, "I am happy that I scored and I want to delicate this goal to my gf who has been my support pillar! However, the team result matters more and my goal was just a bonus on a personal level. Nil Sine Soccere! "

Jazz FC will be their next opponent this Sunday before the league takes a one week break during the Chinese New Year weekend and hattrick hero cum Captain Marvel Yiyang is already forcusing on the next game, " Jazz United is certainly no pushovers, they beat Legends United before which we couldn't and they are around our age group, so we must be mentally prepared for a tough game and hopefully, we can send everyone home happy after the game for the CNY break."

Team Prodigy will also be donning their new jerseys this Sun and fans can catch the glimpse of the new design during the game and place their orders with newly appointed marketing manager, Hua Kun after the game.

Prodigians' dream of plying their trade in the top divisions of Singapore's top amatuer soccer league resumes this weekend. Team Prodigy has steadily climbed 2 divisions under the steady guidance and steering of veteran gaffer cum tribal head figure Chua.

The first season in ESPZEN a year ago was akin to a child struggling in a baby pool with Team Prodigy realising how competitive and ruthless a competitive match was compared to friendlies. Team Prodigy's second season saw them mentally and physically more prepared after a bruising first season and resulted in the team playing superbly in the first half of the season. However, complacency led to its lost of the grip at the top towards the end.

Despite the slowdown towards the end, Team Prodigy has managed to hang onto promotion and in the mean time put on a decent run of 5 wins on the trot together including friendlies with an outstanding performance by a patched up team against Div 1 team, the one with only 1 letter, "H".

Season 3 promises to be a different ball game with opponents of an even higher standard and raring to go. These teams are vastly experienced and are of a higher calibre compared to previous adversaries. There is a strong international flavour to Div 7 with the likes of expatriates involved in Olympique Singapore and Suave Fusion. Youthful and energetic heartlander teams such as Simei United will also prove stern opposition to Team Prodigy. In particular, it is to be noted that the eastern based Simei United will prove to be worthy derby rivals. Expect fireworks to be all over when we meet.

Furthermore, lets not forget about the veterans of Div 7 such as Jazz and Red Star Semangat as well as the revival of Interstar FC and team Sparta Cowboys which is newly formed.

However, Team Prodigy under the debut managerial guidance of Ken Goh, is defiant and quietly confident. Goh remarked, "Prodigians has over the past year shown itself to be stubborn opposition and have performed against the odds. We have an established team of players and a squad of committed players to be unleashed against our oppositions. Our style of football has been ingrained and we are familiar with each others style of play to produce an effective performance on the pitch."

"We have come a long way and were taught footballing lessons in the past. Its time to kick off a new season with fresh minds and legs to continue our climb towards higher divisions in the league."

Team Prodigy all set for new season

Team Prodigy is set to begin their 3rd season in ESPZEN Sunday league after wrapping up their pre-season friendlies matches which concluded with a narrow 0-2 loss to prospective Div 1 team Team H after holding them for long periods of the game. The performance certainly encouraged ex-manager Chua who led Prodigy to two consecutive promotions since their debut in 2008. Although the lastest promotion is albeit by default as one of the team in div 7 has pulled out of the league, Chua insists he is taking nothing for granted and has now assembled a team that is capable of challanging for promotion once again in the new division. In came striker Hongyao and prodigal young winger Weiyang who will add more firepower and strength in depth to the team.

Rumour has it that Team Prodigy secured the signature of Weiyang from under the noses of Manchester United and the hot prospect has shown his potential with his dazzling footwork and pace during the friendlies and veteran winger Bernard has nothing but high praise for the youngster: " He certainly reminds me of myself when I was young and youthful and the competition for places will only benefit the team overall. "

The club is also close to unveiling their new jersey for the 2009 season and fans can expect to get their favourite players' jerseys in the club store next week. Manager Ken who is scouting in South Africa said over the telephone interview: " With this core group of players and the talent and camadarie built up over the last two seasons, I believe we have the strongest squad for years and we hope to win something this year to let everyone has something to remember before they are consumed by work in the future. Finger crossed, we will have a memorable season. "

Hey guys I think we played a pretty decent game and almost held them to a draw. Credit to everyone, all did a great job. It is encouraging to see how the team was able to adapt and play well together despite missing some regulars. This bodes well for the upcoming season as we all know, we will be bound to miss a few players here and there across the season. I dare say our squad strength now is just about right and we should have a good exciting season ahead in espZen division 7. Also, our new boys - Weiyang and Hongyao both had good games and it is nice to see them integrate with our team.

The new season should commence this coming Sunday, 11th January as per espZen's email. But at this moment, espZen has not finalized the league structure/fixtures for the new season so I'm not quite sure whether the league can really start this Sunday. We will keep you guys informed (thru this blog) as soon as we have any news and you guys can also keep yourselves updated at the espZen website.
