Fair Play Award: Team Prodigy

Our trophy and how we got it.

Team Prodigy is the proud winner of the Fair Play Award for Division 9 of the ESPZEN Sunday League Season 8.

This accolade did not come easily to the team. When it became apparent during mid-season that the team did not stand a realistic chance to win the championship, a crisis meeting took place between the inner circle of Team Prodigy. They gathered for one purpose, figuring a way to save themselves from getting the sack by the board. A particularly bright adviser to Chua came up with the ingenious idea of targeting the Fair Play Award. "I'm told the silverware for the award is as magnificent as for the champion. Maybe the board won't even notice", so said the adviser who is rumoured to be gunning for a PHD. Chua agreed.

The men proceeded to institute a training regime to drill ethics, fair play and sportsmanship into every single player. A motto was formed - A Prodigian is ultimately a Gentleman, a Professional, and a Sportsman. Day after day, these words were recited by the players. Every soccer practice was preceded by 2 hours of in-class theoretical lessons on ethics, professional responsibilities and anger management. Pitch training started to become dominated by demonstrations and practice of how to make a clean tackle. Players that failed to meet the exacting standards set by the manager and his trusty lieutenants were sent packing. The team's management were absolutely bent on rooting out any dirty, unsporting and ungentlemanly gene in the players. It was hell tough, but slowly and surely, it worked.

Team Prodigy started to play an entire new concept of amateur football. A concept completely foreign to every team in the ultra-competitive ESPZEN league. A concept based on friendship, camaraderie, fair play and sportsmanship. The joy from every game came not from banging in goal after goal, but from playing it with a smile. A huge smile. The result is there for all to see. Team Prodigy emerged the fairest team in Division 9. And with a score of 9.2/10, it was one of only two teams in the entire league (72 teams), to achieve a score above 9! The gamble by the team's inner circle had paid off. Their jobs were saved and in the process, Team Prodigy was transformed into a team of gentlemen.

Hence always remember,

"A Prodigian is ultimately a Gentleman, a Professional, and a Sportsman."
